Science in the park

Vodlozersky national park is one of remarkable places in European North of Russia. There are still virgin (aboriginal) taiga forest tract on its territory where undisturbed animals and birds inhabit. Considerable areas of the park are occupied with inviolate bogs where rare plants grow. There is a lot of fish in reservoirs - dream of fishermen and gratuitous sustenance for local inhabitants and tourists. To preserve it, first of all it's necessary to have authentic view about territory of the park, its nature and culture. Exactly from this scientific researches have started: territory of the park was investigated, inventory of its natural and cultural objects was made. First all the works were making by forces of researchers from different scientific institutions of Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, Petrozavodsk and other cities of Russia. And in 1992 with a view to organize and co-ordinate scientific researches on a territory of Vodlozero, scientific department was organized in park. It was a big event for park: so far Vodlozersky national park is one of few parks in Russia which has such important structural subdivision. Inventory works of natural variety and cultural heritage of Vodlozero area were continued and were made not only by recruited specialists but also by research workers of the park.
Since 2001 in the department work was underway on priority directions of scientific activity, optimization of its structure and personnel's routine of work. As a result a long-term complex program of researches is worked out, department is made up of the staff. In present time researches in the park go in two directions: "Structure and dynamics of natural ecosystems on a territory of the park" and "Forming of folk culture in Vodlozero area". Forests, reservoirs, bogs and also birds, water and surface vertebrates are studied in frames of first direction. In frames of second direction ethnic history of Vodlozero and Poileksie inhabitants their folk traditions and beliefs are studied. For keeping data and receiving entire complex picture of all variety of natural environment and cultural heritage of the park, all the information is entering in geographic informational system (GIS). This system is one of last achievement in the area of informational communication technologies. It helps to create electronic maps, to form digital cartographic thematic data, databases of all directions of national park activity, to receive necessary information for analysis, planning and taking of administrative decisions. Researches which are carrying out in park solve not only scientific tasks but also promote development of other directions of park's activity. In particular, on the basis of scientific elaborations on park's territory ecological routes are forming, different programs of ecological education are working out, recommendations of rational use of nature are substantiating, etc.
At present time science in the park took a worth place. In science department has formed hard-working collective of researchers with high professional skill, who are guided by following principles:

  • Study of natural potential of the park as ecosystem
  • Complex approach to study of cultural heritage
  • Intercommunication of science and practical tasks of the park
  • Use of last achievements in the area of informational communication technologies (GIS).
